My take on completion of 3 years of Modi Government

The Modi Government will complete it’s 3rd year on the 14th of the next month. Many decisions were taken. A lot of debate has taken place on the consequences of these decisions.

Let’s start with issues on which the performance was not up to the mark.

1. Kashmir Unrest:

Stone pelting incidents are on a rise. The alliance between BJP and PDP in the state has failed. The by-poll of Srinagar Lok Sabha seat saw a turnout of less than 10%.

2. River inter-linking project:

This project has the potential to solve major problems India is facing right now. Farmers commit suicide because they can’t repay their loans. They can’t repay their loans due to various reasons but the major one is acute shortage of water for irrigation. If this problem is solved, it will have a domino effect. Interlinking of Godaveri and Krishna in AP has been completed in 2015. But many projects are stalled due to disputes. More planning is required for this to be successful.

3. Illegal immigrants from Bangladesh:

2 crore Bangladeshi’s are living in India illegally. Yes you read that right! That’s as much as the population of Sri Lanka! Many of them have now obtained Aadhaar cards and ration cards too. It puts up a lot of burden on our nation’s resources. But only a few thousand have been deported by the government.

4. Employment Generation:

With all those Make in India, Skill India, Start up India programs the government has failed to create jobs as much as it should have.

Now the achievements:

1. The Naga Peace Accord:

It was signed in August 2015 in the presence of PM Modi thus ending the insurgency of many years.

2. India-Bangladesh Enclaves:

A long time dispute of area with Bangladesh was settled in May 2015 by the passing of 100th Amendment to the Indian Constituion. The border will now be sealed by mid 2018.

3. Ujala Yojana:

21 crore LED bulbs have been distributed in this scheme. I personally have bought 15 LED bulbs and installed them int the building and my home. We are saving around 2k per year because less energy is required for LED bulbs. A 9W LED bulb emits more light than a 40W incandescent bulb. If all the street lights in the country are replaced with LED bulbs thousands of crores will be saved by the government. This task is in progress.

4. Railways:

I was travelling from Nagpur to Pune in December 2016. Garibhrath Express is usually well maintained so had no problem with cleanliness. But the pantry vendors were selling mineral water at Rs. 20 but the MRP was 15. I tweeted about this to Suresh Prabhu and The Ministry of Indian Railways. The guy who sold me the bottle woke me up at 2 am to return 15 rupees for the 3 bottles I purchased. He was so scared that he requested me to give it in writing that my complaint was resolved.

Another one of my complaint:

Give Suresh Prabhu another 10-15 years and he will change the face of Indian Railways.

Note: I have created a new twitter account and my new username is Sap_Speaks. The old account has been deactivated.

 5. Transport Ministry:

Nitin Gadkari is setting targets so high for his ministry that even if they achieve 50% of the targets new records will be set. He has focused a lot on waterways. Transportation through waterways is more cost effective and causes less pollution. World Bank just recently approved a $375 mn loan for India’s 1st waterway project between Haldia in West Bengal and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

6. Goods and Services Tax:

The GST will be implemented from 1st July 2017.

You can read all about GST here : http://www.dailyo.in/business/how-gst-will-change-your-life/story/1/16441.html

7. Digital Transaction Boost:

If everyone from today adopted digital means, thousands of crores rupees excess will be available for the banks to lend. Infrastructure projects, industries, farmers, housing industry, in fact the whole economy will directly benefit if the banks can lend more. The government is going cashless for it’s services too. Payments from fingerprint scanner linked to bank accounts will be the first of its kind of this scale.

BHIM app has now nearly 20 million downloads!

Other major initiatives which have been discussed a lot already:

8. Jan Dhan an Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana

9. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and Soil Health Cards for farmers

10. Demonetization

11. Smart Cities Project

12. Swacch Bharat Abhiyan

and many more..

It is clearly seen that the government is here to perform and won’t hesitate to take bold steps. Surgical strikes were done before also but to publicly announce it was a message to Pakistan. I hope the government works on issues they have failed or where unsatisfactory. It is important to question when something not expected is being done. Also to appreciate when good work is done. Please leave your views on the blog or any issues you want to highlight in the comments. Share the post if you like it. Thank you and Jai Hind!

Last week 2 army personnel were awarded the gallantry awards for the surgical strikes.
